Here we go again. It’s #september and time for the yearly ritual of passing the #federal #budget in the #unitedstates. As is the wont since 1996, this #annual #ritual this time too has become a “fraught” and “tense” affair, with #partisan #gridlock leading to an “inevitable” #government #shutdown, yet again!! It says a lot when the “preeminent” #superpower in the whole #world, can’t pass its #accounts, leave alone pay its #bills, with the #debt #ceiling “showdowns”, held hostage to the #political #brinkmanship.
Even though #debt #rating #agencies such as #fitch and #moodys have either #downgraded or warned of potential #demotions for the #sovereign #rating, the #democrats and especially the #Republicans don’t seem to “get it”. Indeed, I do think they get it, just that in the tradition of #rightwing #parties #worldwide, the #republicans are the #party of NO just for the sake of it, no matter the #consequences. This is the reason all #government #shutdowns have happened whenever there is a #democrat #president, simply because the “nutty” #gop just can’t get themselves to say YES!!
So, here we go for a #month full of “sound and fury” as the #drama on #capitolhill begins in “right” earnest this week. As the #houseofrepresentatives returns to “work” on #Tuesday and with the #senate already in #session, we can expect “action” to begin soon. What makes this round particularly “enjoyable” is that there is #republican #speaker as “they” hold the #house, and he, #kevinmccarthy, is facing a “revolt” from his fellow #party #members, or the so-called #maga #extremists.
Also “complicating” matters is the approaching #elections2024, with many members of both parties up for #reelection, as well as the BIG contest for #potus. Indeed, this is perhaps the most important aspect of the #budget #battle, as the #representatives and the #senators indulge in “posturing”, lest they appear to be “yielding” to their putative #opponents. An interesting aside here is the aforementioned #maga #Republicans, who group under the so-called Freedom Caucus, are not beholden to #wallstreet, getting #funds for their #campaigns largely from #individual #contributors. This makes them less suseptible to “pressure”, though they vote in very #bigbusiness “friendly” ways.
Looming, or should I say, towering over this #spectacle is #donaldtrump himself, who would love a #Government #Shutdown for the sheer “boost” he gets from his “base”, made up of the #extreme and #hard #right #flanks. Indeed, #trump would “harvest” a #Government #Shutdown for the publicity and the #television #rating #points alone, as he is already the #frontrunner for the #nomination of the #gop for the #presidential #elections.
The #UnitedStates is dysfunctiona and the next time someone talks about #american “preeminence”, remind them that since 1996, the number of #years in which they passed a budget “on time” can be counted on one hand.
