Remember #brexit? With much fanfare, the #unitedkingdom was supposed to “take back” control from the #europeanunion and chart its own destiny a la #neo #paxbrittanica! BUT, six years down the line, the #british are worse off than before the #referendum, with the #costoflivingcrisis et al, adding to the notoriously famous “grumpiness” which many thought was a thing of the past. The only “winners” from #brexit have been the #bankers of the #cityoflondon and the #russian and assorted #oligarchs, ensconsconed comfortably in their #walledoff #villas.
Next, Trump! The BIG CON. He came to #power, riding a #populist #wave, promising the faithful, he would Make America Great Again, or the #maga #movement which would “liberate” the #unitedstates from the “grip” of “snooty” and self-serving #elites, who in #trump’s words, had taken away #jobs from the #hinterland through #offshoring and were responsible for the deep #malaise afflicting the #poorly #educated. The result! #maga folks are as worse off, or more, than before, and the biggest #beneficiaries of #trumpism have been the #ultrarich, “helped” by #trillion #dollar #taxcuts.
Back home, #indians have had their “utopian” #dreams in the form of #demonetization, #gst, and the #covid #lockdowns, in succession, the #outcome of these being so #dystopian, so as to render nearly half of #india “drop out” of the #workforce, in echoes of a #desi style #thegreatresignation. Even now, we’re being “sold” the #vishwaguru, #fastestgrowing #economy, and other “fanciful” notions of “greatness”, when the “reality” is that 80 #percent of #indians don’t even make Rs. 20,000 a #month!
Even #vlad “the great” #putin, has managed to “ruin” whatever was left of a “newly reincarnated” #russia, with the average #russian #make of #workingage, sent to the #Ukrainian #front to “freeze” and worse, die without having the #ammunition to protect themselves. As the #ukrainewar “drags on”, one wonders the #purpose and the #point of it all, though the #west with #biden cheering on, did “provike” #vladimirputin to no end. Maybe, the “paranoia” of #putin is justified, as is the “wariness” of #xijinping, who too has taken #china down the #rabbithole of #zerocovid, and #authoritarianism.
So, dear readers! We’ve been “conned” by all these #snakeoil #salesmen (I use the term men for convenience, though #angelamerkel is as much to blame). And, the #fear is that we would be “stuck” with these #conartists for the foreseeable #future, simply because #thereisnoalternative. While #macron does make “noises”, he too is cut from the same cloth as the “august” #pantheon of “leaders” listed above, making the #french as edgy as the #english under #sunak.
Perhaps, it is OK to drink the #koolaid of #falsedawns, much like we amuse ourselves with and #bollywood, as too much of “reality”, on a #friday can be a “put off”. On this “cheery” note, #tgif to all.
